The Gophers are going to roll with a dual-quarterback approach when they open the 2017 season.
Head coach P.J. Fleck told reporters on Thursday that both Conor Rhoda and Demry Croft will play against the University of Buffalo on Aug. 31.
It’s unaware who will take the first snap as Fleck named both players starters and claimed “both guys earned the right to play.”
Rhoda, who played his high school football at Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, is a redshirt senior. He’s made just one start during his time with the Gophers and that came last season in place of an injured Mitch Leidner.
Croft redshirted last season after playing sparingly in three games during his freshman year in 2015.
Between the two, both quarterbacks have completed just 15 passes in their collegiate careers, and Rhoda is the only who has thrown a touchdown.
Earlier this month, Gophers 247 analyst Kyle Goblirsch told GoMN’s One Hunnit Podcast that the team was leaning towards Croft to be the team’s starter.
But for the time being, it appears Fleck sees both quarterbacks as viable options for the team going forward.
