After being swept at Notre Dame last weekend, the Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team had a lot to say in a dominating victory over Arizona State Thursday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
The Gophers piled up 10 goals in a shutout victory, marking the first time in 17 years that the hockey program has put up 10 goals in a game. The last time it happened came in a 10-3 win over Minnesota State on Jan. 17, 2004.
“We had a real strong game tonight…we had some orneriness to us,” Gophers head coach Bob Motzko said. “Arizona State is banged up right now, and tonight was just not going to be a good night.”
The Gophers improved to 12-3 on the season and they’ll go for the series sweep Friday when the puck drops at 4 p.m.
Minnesota was No. 1 in the national polls prior to falling to No. 4 in this week’s USCHO.com rankings. Boston College took the No. 1 spot, followed by Minnesota State and North Dakota.
Overall, Minnesota teams dominated the top 10 as St. Cloud State is sixth and Minnesota-Duluth is seventh.
