When true freshman Philip Nelson was named the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers midway through the 2012 football season, the handwriting was on the wall for second-stringer Max Shortell.
Today, the Gophers announced that Shortell will transfer to another school when the season ends, according to the Minnesota Daily.
Shortell, a sophomore, passed for 1,162 yards over two seasons for the Gophers. He made three starts this years, against Syracuse, Iowa and Northwestern.
