The Gopher football team has landed a recruit from unusual territory: The Netherlands.
Richard Agyekum announced a verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota after a recent visit to the Twin Cities.

The cornerback turned heads at the European combine in April and was one of the five standouts on defense, according to 247 Sports.
Gopher football reporter Ryan Burns notes the Gophers first noticed Agyekum at a recent football camp at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
“Once I stepped on campus at Minnesota, it felt like home,” Agyekum said to Burns. “The feeling I got from being on campus there and talking with all the people felt perfect. I also got to camp last night, and it was awesome. The energy they gave during the drills just gave me a boost out there. I decided after camp that I wanted to go to Minnesota.”
The 5-foot-9, 155-pound cornerback also received offers from Penn State, Cincinnati and Rutgers.
Agyekum will be a member of Minnesota’s 2020 recruiting class, which currently ranks 39th nationally and seventh in the Big Ten.
This year’s recruiting class (2019) ranks 44th nationally and 10th in the Big Ten.
The Gophers are coming off one of the better seasons in recent memory, highlighted by a Bowl Game win over Georgia Tech, as well bringing home Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the first time in 15 years after a victory over the Wisconsin Badgers.
They’ll open the season on Aug. 29 when they host South Dakota State at TCF Bank Stadium.
