Katie Borowicz, a redshirt freshman guard on the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team, announced Wednesday that her playing career is over due to a medical condition.
The Roseau, Minnesota native and younger sister of North Dakota leading scorer Kacie Borowicz, missed all of the 2021-22 season after undergoing brain surgery to relieve pressure on her spine, said her pain is worse when playing basketball.
“When I play, it only gets worse and I’ve come to associated basketball with pain. I have been struggling for the past year to push through, and put a smile on my face, but my body is telling me enough,” Borowicz announced, adding that her body is “telling me enough.”

“We cannot thank [Katie Borowicz], our 2022-23 captain, enough for her blood, sweat and tears she poured into our program. Once a Gopher, always a Gopher,” the official Gophers social media account wrote.
Borowicz joined the Gophers in 2020-21 and made one start as a true freshman. After missing the entire 2021-22 season she returned and averaged 8.5 points per game this past season while starting 17 of 29 games.
ESPN ranked Borowicz as the 98th-best player in country in the 2020 high school graduating class.
