Big news for the Minnesota Twins today as the team announced a contract extension with All-Star closer Glen Perkins.
The Stillwater native restructured his contract, according to the Twins. The new deal locks him up through the 2017 season, with a team option for 2018. The four-year deal guarantees him $22,175,000, according to Yahoo Sports.
“I grew up in Minnesota and there’s nowhere else I want to play,” Perkins said, via Rhett Bollinger. “So now hopefully this is something where I can play here my whole career.”
According to La Velle Neal III of the Star Tribune, his new deal will pay him $4.025 million in 2014, $4.6 million in 2015, $6.3 million in 2016 and $6 million in 2017. The club option for 2018 is worth $6.5 million.
Perkins, 31, went 2-0 with a 2.30 earned-run average and 36 saves last season. As noted by the Star Tribune, he was picked as an All-Star for the first time in his career. He’s totaled 54 saves in two seasons as the closer.
The left-hander pitched for the Gophers before being selected by the Twins in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft.
