Despite being named MVP of the American League Champion Series, former Twins outfielder Delmon Young won’t be playing in Detroit next year. Tigers President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski told the Detroit Free Press he doesn’t plan to re-sign the free agent. Dombrowski says Victor Martinez will be sliding into Young’s role as designated hitter.
“I’d like to see how the process plays out. It’s my first year on the free agency market, so I’m just going to see how it goes,” Young told Michigan Live.
He hit .313 with three home runs in the 2012 playoffs and batted .268 with 26 home runs over 191 regular-season games in a Tigers uniform, MLB.com note.
Young is also trying to reach a deal in his hate-crime harassment case. Young is accused of yelling anti-semitic remarks and tackling one victim to the ground outside a New York City hotel in April.
