Ex-Gophers guard Joe Coleman has signed on to play basketball at Saint Mary’s University, according to ESPN.
“It came down to the fact that coach (Randy) Bennett has been able to develop guards and also that they have playing time available,” Coleman said. “When coach (Tubby) Smith left (Minnesota), I decided I wanted to go somewhere that I could expand my game.”
Coleman asked for his released from the University of Minnesota on May 15. NCAA transfer rules force him to sit out next season and he’ll have two years of eligibility remaining.
As a sophomore last season, Coleman averaged 8.7 poings and 3.6 rebounds per game.
He was named the 2011 Minnesota Mr. Basketball winner after guiding Hopkins High School to a state championship.
