After 34 games, the Minnesota Twins might be a bit improved in the win-loss column this year (17-17) as opposed to last year (10-24), but there are starting pitchers in the minors that might be ready again for the big leagues.
Nick Nelson, who writes for the TwinsDaily blog, takes a look at Kyle Gibson, Cole De Vries and Samuel Deduno, and comes to the conclusion that all three of these hurlers deserve a chance with the Twins, who rank 26th in the majors with a 5.04 starting pitchers’ ERA.
Nelson says tonight’s starter, Pedro Hernandez (1-0, 5.96 ERA), is probably one more dud away from getting bumped.
Of the the three hurlers above, Gibson may have the strongest case to replace Hernandez. He’s coming off a complete game shutout in Triple-A Rochester, and has a 3.32 ERA through seven starts.
Hernandez, however, isn’t the only Twins starter who might find himself in a Red Wings uniform soon. Star Tribune writer Jim Souhan makes that case with Vance Worley: He’s 1-4 with a team-worst 7.15 ERA. If he can’t improve dramatically, he’ll find himself in the minors and removed from the Twins’ blueprints.
