Last week, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was asked if he would be ready to retire after his current contract expires in 2019.
His response: Maybe.
As he told the Green Bay Press-Gazette: “I fully expect to play well and if I can play seven more good years and we can have some more sucess and win a couple more (championships), then it might be time to hang it up.”
Also: “I’ve always said as long as I can be [a] 100 percent offseason contributor and be here for the OTAs and want to be here and continue to want to put in the time in the offseason, then I’m going to be playing. As long as I have my legs and that commitment to the team, then I’ll keep playing.”
NBCSports.com’s Mike Florio is taking those quotes and spinning them in a Rodgers vs. Brett Favre direction.
Florio says the second quote, in particular is a “subtle slap at Favre” … who is well known for wanting to play, but not wanting to get in shape with the team in June and July.
Writes Florio: “Unlike Favre, Rodgers won’t be keeping the Packers or the team’s loyal fans in the dark about when he finally will be calling it quits — at least not for the next seven years.”
Whether Rodgers meant to tweak Favre or not, it also comes at a time when the Packers are also trying to mend fences with No. 4 in order to perhaps retire his number someday at Lambeau Field.
