It’s not over quite yet.
Ex-Twin Johan Santana is planning on signing a free agent contract over the winter — determined to make a comeback.
Santana is recovering from his second shoulder surgery in three years, as his Mets contract (six-years, $137.5 million) expires.
Santana first went under the knife in September of 2010 and did not return to Mets until Opening Day 2012.
As CBSSports.com points out: “In 21 starts last year, Santana went 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA, his worst season since sticking in the big leagues full-time. He threw the franchise’s first no-hitter on June 1, but struggled down the stretch before being shut down with ankle and back problems in mid-August.”
According to the New York Daily News, Santana told his agent he isn’t “going out like this.”
Santana, 34, is in Venezuela now, feeling “strong and optimistic.”
His agent, Chris Leible, says the goal is to get Santana ready for spring training, somewhere, somehow.
