Jose Berrios will make his 2017 debut with the Twins as the starter for Saturday’s game in Cleveland.
Minnesota made the announcement following Thursday’s 7-6 win over the White Sox.
“It just seems like his time,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said, via TwinsBaseball.com. “Tep was an option, but I was concerned about the lack of work. It’s probably not the best situation. But [Berrios] has stretched together some starts. He’s made progress in areas that we need. We’ll throw him out there against Cleveland on the road, which is a tough first assignment, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Berrios made 14 starts with the Twins last season and finished with an ugly 8.02 ERA. His struggles were largely due to the inability to find his normally solid control. He walked 35 batters and gave up 12 homers in just 58 1/3 innings last season.
