Comcast has thrown a curve ball to baseball fans in the Twin Cities, and it’s a good one for worried customers who thought they might not be able to watch Game 1 of the Twins’ playoff series against the Yankees on Friday night.
The game will be televised exclusively on MLB Network, and that originally meant that Comcast customers who aren’t subscribed to a cable package that includes MLB Network were out of luck.
But Comcast has switched gears, now deciding to include the Minneapolis-St. Paul market in its group of markets that will receive MLB Network on a free trial basis through Oct. 11.
Here’s the statement from Comcast:
“Comcast will make the MLB Network free preview available to all customers in time for Friday’s Twins-Yankees playoff game. Video customers will have access to MLB Network at no additional cost through October 11. The MLB Network free preview will be available on the following channels: 272/733 SD, 873/1219 HD. Customers can also say “watch MLB Network” into their Xfinity Voice Remote.”
MLB Network struck a deal with Comcast to allow some participating markets to get the free preview, but Minneapolis-St. Paul was not originally a part of that deal.
But no worries any longer no matter what Comcast cable package you subscribe to in the Twin Cities.
If you’re not a Comcast customer, the free preview of MLB Network is also being provided to DirecTV, DISH and Sling TV customers.

Game 1 of the best-of-five American League Divisional Series between the Twins and Yankees starts at 6:07 p.m. Central Time.
The rest of the games are scheduled to be televised on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).
