Round 1:
(3) St. Cloud State Huskies 5
(19) Minnesota State Mavericks 4
The St. Cloud State Huskies secured a victory over the Minnesota State Mavericks with stellar performance off the advantage. Despite the Mavericks drawing first blood and firing 10 more shots on goal than St. Cloud, the Huskies were able to play more efficiently, scoring on 3 out 4 power play opportunities to Minnesota State’s 1 out of 3. The Huskies’ can credit their consistently strong second line for the game-winning goal, senior forward Jimmy Murray made the shot with a little under 3.5 minutes to go in the final period off an assist from Blake Winiecki and David Morley.
Round 2:
Bemidji State Beavers 4
(20) Minnesota Gophers 2
Defending North Star Cup champions Bemidji State pulled out a win over Minnesota with a late-game surge after a neck-and-neck match. Minnesota scored an early goal right before the four minute mark off a Connor Reilly shot from the left circle set up by Tyler Shehey and Justin Kloos, while the Gophers’ freshman goalie Eric Shierhorn beat back 10 Bemidji shots on goal before the buzzer sounded on the first period. Bemidji state would continue to pressure Minnesota all night with tough checking and defense, finally stealing the momentum halfway through the third with a power play goal from the Beavers’ Markus Gerbrandt that sealed the win. Gerbrandt would tack on another goal with just over a minute left in the third period to send the Beavers on for a chance to take home the cup for a second year straight
