The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has dropped all of the charges against former Timberwolves’ forward Dante Cunningham.
He was facing felony domestic assault charges from an April incident in which Cunningham allegedly choked his girlfriend in his suburban Minneapolis home.
Hennepin County prosecutor Mike Freeman made the announcement on Monday. He said there isn’t proof “beyond a reasonable doubt” that Cunningham committed the crime.
Cunningham, who maintained his innocence throughout the process, told the Associated Press he is “ecstatic and ready to move forward in life.”
Cunningham averaged 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Wolves last season. He became a free agent this summer, but several teams said they’d wait for the legal process to play out before considering signing him.
“He’s had this cloud hanging over his head,” Cunningham’s defense attorney Emanuel Serstock told the Pioneer Press. “He’s going to get back to his agent and start working with his future.”
KSTP reports that Cunningham is hoping he will be re-signed by the Wolves.
According to the Bleacher Report, it makes sense for Cunningham to try and stay with the Wolves.
“Not only is he familiar with the team, but the impending departure of All-Star Kevin Love in a reported trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers (h/t Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski) will also have the Timberwolves mired in a rebuilding period. A role player like Cunningham would have a better chance of seeing more minutes and bolster his status in the rotation.”
