Vikings’ quarterback Teddy Bridgewater isn’t upset that Matt Cassel will get the nod to start at quarterback.
Coach Mike Zimmer announced Monday that Cassel will be the starter when the team opens the regular season in St. Louis. Cassel has been the favorite to win the job throughout camp and has put up solid numbers in the preseason.
In three games during the preseason Cassel was 26 of 39 for 367 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He threw a touchdown and an interception in a 152-yard passing performance at Kansas City Saturday night.
The Pioneer Press says Zimmer declined to name the starter after Saturday night’s game, but he did right away on Monday.
Bridgewater wasn’t upset with Zimmer’s decision. He told reporters he wants to continue to learn under Cassel. He remains very confident in his future role with the team.
“As I stated once I got drafted, I felt like this was the perfect situation for me,” Bridgewater said. “Right now, I’m just able to learn, sit back and continue to learn, but also learn and prepare myself as a starter because as a backup you’re one play away from behind out there on the gridiron with the guys.”
According to Pro Football Talk, Bridgewater has played well in the preseason, posting an incredible 117.1 passer rating – in what’s been a turnover-free preseason for the rookie.
“I feel pretty good about the preseason, because I have been able to make strides and get better each game,” Bridgewater said. “But I still have a lot to learn and a log way to go.”
