The hype train following Jordan Greenway is on its way to Minnesota as the bruising forward from Boston University has signed a three-year contract with the Wild.
It’s expected that he’ll join the team immediately, giving Minnesota forward depth and elite size: he’s listed at 6-foot-6 and 226 pounds.
Hard to match up with him
After Boston knocked Cornell out of the NCAA Tournament over the weekend, Cornell coach Mike Schafer described how hard it is to play against Greenway.
“You need multiple people to play him,” Schafer told The Cornell Daily Sun. “He gets determined down low, you better get ready to come down and cheat and help because you’re just not going to handle a guy like that one-on-one.”
Dominate in the NHL?
“One of the things we say to him all the time is, ‘Why can’t you be one of the next great American players?'” his coach at Boston, David Quinn, told the Boston Herald.
“I think he is slowly starting to realize how good he can be and how good he actually is.”
Last July, Wild director of player development Brad Bombardir told the Pioneer Press there aren’t many guys in the NHL that will be able to stop him.
First African-American for Team USA
Greenway has been in the spotlight since being drafted in the second round (50th overall) by the Wild in 2015, but the lights got brighter last month when he became the first African-American to play for Team USA at the Olympics.
Even Mike Eruzione, a Boston alum and captain of the 1980 “Miracle On Ice” team, loves Greenway’s chances in the NHL.
“It’s exciting to talk about Jordan when he plays because he’s so powerful and can be so dominant,” Eruzione told The Tab in February.
