No time is ever a good time for your clean up hitter to go down. That’s what the Twins are now managing with third baseman Trevor Plouffe.
Plouffe appears to be headed to the disabled list with what has been diagnosed as a strained intercostal muscle. That’s doc speak for soreness around the ribs.

“He’s active tonight but more than likely we’ll DL him tomorrow,” Twins GM Terry Ryan told team blogger Rhett Bollinger. “We’ll have another guy in place. But this is all dependent on what goes on. He’s active tonight because he can still field and those kinds of things.”
It’s a bad time for the Twins, who are coming off a three-game sweep of the Angels and Plouffe’s bat played a big part of that. He was hitting .302/.333/.535 with two home runs and six RBIs in 45 plate appearances to start the season.
“It’s not the worst thing in the world,” Plouffe said, via TwinsBaseball.com. “I’ve felt some discomfort in there the last couple days, but it hasn’t bothered me doing baseball stuff. And then I was jogging and I felt it grab a little bit. But even right now, I feel OK doing baseball stuff. So we’ll give it a few days and hopefully the inflammation goes down.”
With Plouffe out, the Twins will move Eduardo Nunez to third base and recall Jorge Polanco to fill the spot on the roster.
